How Technology Will Shape the Future of Home Care

In 2026, older adults and individuals with disabilities can enjoy high-quality medical and non-medical services in the comfort of their homes. And none of it would be possible without technology.

The 2026 Future of Home Care white paper revealed that AI is a top driver of change within the industry. Leaders agreed that it presented significant opportunities for growth, optimization, and improving the overall quality of their care. Software platforms are already integrating AI features to make better, faster, data-driven decisions that improve health outcomes and enable customization at scale.

Technology has already done so much to move our industry forward, but in reality, it’s just getting started. Based on the findings in our report, these are our predictions for home care’s future as a connected, ecosystem-driven world.

Top AI Uses in Home Care

One of AI’s strongest use cases is to augment human capacity. Rather than replace employees’ roles entirely, it can be used to unlock their potential and lighten their administrative load, which in turn frees them up to handle higher-value tasks. According to the survey, home care leaders think AI will have the greatest impact on shift matching/automated scheduling (64%), workforce utilization (62%), and improvements in caregiver engagement and retention (59%).

Automated Scheduling

Some platforms are already using AI for scheduling in home care and achieving excellent results. Much of the traditional scheduling process is bogged down by inefficiency: manually matching caregivers to available visits, calling around the caregiver roster when someone can’t make their shift, and optimizing routes to reduce the distance between two appointments.

All of these steps are essential, but they can also be completed much more easily by AI. Why ask a human scheduler to consider dozens of data points if technology can create perfect match-ups within seconds? Why chase down replacements on the phone when you could instantly notify every qualified and available caregiver via an app?

Automated scheduling considers factors like client preferences, caregiver skills and availability, overtime, distance travelled, and more to create aligned shift assignments every time. It also distills key trends into reports that help scheduling teams understand their effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.

Workforce Utilization

Workforce utilization measures how effectively an agency’s human resources are being allocated. It considers whether there are any unused blocks of time in a caregiver’s day that are too small for a full visit but significant enough to be reclaimed by reorganizing tasks. It also considers whether a caregiver’s desired weekly hours align with their actual schedule and whether they are maximizing their billable hours (i.e., avoiding excessive time spent on the road). 

AI supports workforce utilization by removing bias from the scheduling process. Manual caregiver scheduling may unconsciously favor certain caregivers for easy shifts or de-prioritize others whom they don’t know as well. AI adheres only to workers’ preferred hours and the best possible route, evenly distributing high-quality shifts and overtime based on availability.

Caregiver Engagement & Retention

Retaining caregivers remains at the top of home care leaders’ minds, as industry churn rates are as high as ever. Administrative overload is common, as is isolation due to the solo nature of home visits and paycheck instability caused by inefficient scheduling. Caregivers may also be under-trained and, therefore, overwhelmed by the more complex demands of their job; agencies are constantly trying to plug staffing gaps and may fast-track onboarding to get employees on the road.

Using sentiment analysis and overtime patterns, AI can flag caregivers at risk of turnover before they reach the point of no return. If their schedule becomes too intense, for example, the system can proactively suggest a lighter load or a shift swap to achieve more balance. As discussed above, AI also matches caregivers to open shifts based on their skill sets (among other criteria), mitigating the risk of specialized cases being assigned to underqualified team members.

Other Technological Trends To Look out For in 2026

In addition to AI, other technologies will be advancing the industry well into the future. Remote patient monitoring (RPM), predictive analytics, and smart home technologies are important pieces of the home care improvement puzzle.

Remote Monitoring & Telehealth in the Home

RPM leverages wearable devices and sensors to monitor a client’s condition, sending a steady stream of feedback to care teams around the clock. As soon as an anomaly is detected, care teams can jump into action rather than waiting until the next in-person appointment to realize something is wrong. Telehealth visits are another form of remote care that helps clinicians and agencies track vital signs and symptoms between in‑person visits.

The benefits of RPM are numerous, including freeing up human resources to serve more clients. If caregivers no longer need to track clients’ vitals in person, they can instead direct their attention to higher-impact visits that benefit from the human touch. Automated data capture also reduces the risk of error associated with manual data entry, leading to more accurate and reliable health records.

Smart Home Devices & Safety Technologies

Smart home devices help mitigate the most common risks of living alone. Fall-detection sensors, for example, provide an invisible layer of protection by automatically alerting emergency services if a sudden impact or unusual lack of movement is detected. 

Motion-activated lighting and voice assistants eliminate the need to navigate dark hallways or fumble for switches, while stove shut-off devices prevent fire hazards by automatically cutting the power supply to a burner that’s been left on. Meanwhile, smart locks and video doorbells empower those with mobility challenges to manage home security from their smartphone, instead of rushing to the door and risking a fall. 

Predictive Analytics

One of AI’s superpowers is the ability to analyze huge volumes of data in very little time. Home care software collects vast amounts of information that AI can use to draw conclusions, identify trends, and predict future outcomes. 

Over time, AI can collect insights from post-acute client visits to understand which interventions are most effective to help reduce hospital readmissions. It can also connect dots between different conditions, helping care teams understand which clients may be at risk of future health issues. On a smaller scale, AI can cross-reference real-time data from wearable devices with an agency’s bank of health records to detect health decline even before symptoms appear.
